All of us are experiencing the unimaginable effects of the Covid-19 crisis in a multitude of ways. But the most drastic and time-sensitive impacts are being felt by those on the front lines, our heroic health care workers. As a company, we’ve been trying to solve one basic question: “How can we help?”

We found several unused N95 masks in our facility and contacted one of our local hospitals, UnityPoint. They had an immediate need and picked them up right away. The next question was, “Do you have any face shields?” Unfortunately, we did not.

The following day we came across an article about 3D printing of face shields as a means to fulfill the growing PPE backlog. We had recently purchased a 3D printer to address an internal need. Could we repurpose it to print face shields or address other pressing PPE needs?

We contacted UnityPoint with our concept and learned that we weren’t the only ones thinking along those lines. They connected us with another local company that shared a simpler concept than the one we had considered. It used transparency paper affixed to the 3D printed visor with black spring paper clips. It has become difficult to source the shield component as demand has increased dramatically nationwide, so this new design solved that issue and would also enable UnityPoint to standardize the process.

UnityPoint then informed us they required "ear savers" that wrap around the back of health care workers' heads, a much-needed addition since the mask elastic is wearing away at their skin.  We and other local firms are now following the same process for both items with a collective goal of printing 1500 face shields and 1500 ear savers as quickly as possible.

PLEASE SHARE THIS DESIGN for visors and THIS DESIGN for ear savers with anyone that has a 3D printer – both in our community and in others where hospital systems may require these items. There are plenty of opportunities to help, but this is one way that those with 3D printers can pitch in to keep our courageous health care workers safe.
